In the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons, promoters like potassium or copper are often added to cobalt or iron catalysts to improve their performance. The precise mechanism by which a co-catalyst functions is often complex and depends on the specific reaction and the materials involved. Understanding and optimizing the use of co-catalysts is crucial for developing efficient and economical chemical processes.
