Common examples include vending machines, arcade and pinball machines, washers and dryers in laundromats, parking meters, car wash bays, and pay phones. The term is often used to distinguish such devices from those that rely on cashless or manual payment methods.

Mechanism and operation involve a coin mechanism that verifies denomination and authenticity, accepts valid coins into a storage container, returns change if provided, and triggers the machine’s function. After a coin is accepted, the device enables its service for a defined duration or until a product is dispensed. If a coin is rejected, it is returned to the user.
