Cognacstyle

Cognacstyle is a non-official term used to describe brandy products that are produced in a manner inspired by the Cognac region, yet do not necessarily meet the legal and geographic criteria required to be labeled as Cognac. The term is often used in marketing or casual discussion to convey a cognac-like profile or production method without implying origin in the Cognac AOC.

In practice, cognacstyle products may follow traditional cognac production specifics such as using grapes historically associated with Cognac (including Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard), employing copper pot stills for a double distillation, and aging the distilled spirit in oak barrels. The oak choices, including varieties like Limousin or Tronçais, and the blending process contribute to a smooth, aromatic character with notes of dried fruit, vanilla, spice, and subtle toast.

Regulatory and labeling considerations distinguish cognacstyle from true Cognac. Cognac is protected by the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC); products described as cognacstyle may be produced outside the Cognac region or fail to meet AOC requirements, and thus cannot be legally sold as Cognac. Descriptors such as “cognac-style” or “cognac-inspired” are commonly used to indicate a cognac-like approach rather than an official designation.

Cognacstyle can occupy various market segments, from affordable, accessible brandies to premium aging projects. They are typically used for sipping or in cocktails and are valued for providing a cognac-type experience at a broader range of price points.
