CodeFirstAnsätze, or code-first approaches, are development strategies in which the primary artifacts of a software project are defined in source code rather than in separate models or database schemas. In these approaches, domain models, data structures, and API surfaces are modeled in code, and other artifacts such as database schemas, migrations, and documentation are generated from that code. They are often contrasted with database-first or model-first approaches, where the database schema or a modeling tool dictates the structure.

Common domains include database access layers via object-relational mappers (ORMs), where developers write domain classes and the ORM generates the database schema and migrations. Entity Framework Code First, Django’s ORM, and Rails migrations are examples of code-first patterns in practice. In API design, code-first can mean deriving API specifications from annotated code, rather than designing an OpenAPI contract first. This broad interpretation covers scenarios where code definitions drive both persistence and interface definitions.

Benefits of CodeFirstAnsätze include faster initial development, a single source of truth in code, and improved support for refactoring and type checking. Tooling can automate migrations, scaffolding, and documentation, with version control tracking changes to models alongside application code.

Limitations include the risk that the resulting database design favors code structure over optimized data architecture, potential drift if migrations are not carefully managed, and reliance on tooling to keep the database in sync. For complex databases and certain performance or compliance constraints, a database-first or model-driven alternative may offer more explicit control.
