The term is not a formal standard, but it is commonly used to indicate that playback, editing, or processing depends on the availability of a specific codec or decoder.

In practice, a media container or streaming pipeline may be described as codecdependent if its successful playback requires a compatible codec implementation. For example, a video file encoded with a proprietary codec may require the vendor’s decoder, while an open or widely supported codec may be more broadly decodable. Hardware decoders in devices can also render a codecdependent path, limiting performance or compatibility to devices that implement the same codec.
