Cochinealkarmiini

Cochinealkarmiini, also known as carmine or cochineal extract, is a red pigment derived from the dried bodies of the cochineal insect, Dactylopius coccus. These insects are native to tropical and subtropical South America and Mexico, where they feed on prickly pear cacti. The vibrant red color comes from carminic acid, a substance the insects produce to deter predators.

To produce cochinealkarmiini, the cochineal insects are harvested, dried, and then crushed. The carminic acid is then extracted using water or alcohol. The resulting liquid is filtered and processed further to yield the final pigment. Different processing methods can result in various shades of red, ranging from bright crimson to deep purplish-red.

Cochinealkarmiini has been used for centuries as a natural coloring agent in food, cosmetics, and textiles. Its brilliant and stable color makes it highly desirable. In the food industry, it is commonly found in yogurts, candies, beverages, and processed meats. In cosmetics, it provides color to lipsticks, blushes, and eyeshadows. Historically, it was also a significant dye for fabrics. Due to its natural origin, it is sometimes preferred over synthetic red colorants, though it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
