Coatkerrosten

Coatkerrosten is a term used in coatings science to refer to the outermost layer of a multilayer coating system. In practice it is the topcoat that sits on the substrate, providing protective, decorative, and sometimes functional properties. The concept is similar to the English term topcoat.

Materials used for coatkerrosten vary with application. Common resin chemistries include polyurethane, epoxy, acrylic, and silicone. The formulation may contain pigments for color, UV stabilizers to resist sunlight, corrosion inhibitors, and occasionally nanoparticles or fillers to enhance hardness, scratch resistance, or barrier performance.

The primary functions of coatkerrosten are to protect the underlying substrate from moisture, chemicals, abrasion, and environmental weathering, while delivering desired aesthetics such as gloss, color, and texture. In many applications the topcoat also adds specific functionalities, for example improved UV resistance, chemical resistance, or anti-fingerprint properties. The performance of the coatkerrosten depends on adhesion to the underlying layer, the quality of surface preparation, curing conditions, and the overall thickness.

Application and processing methods for coatkerrosten include spraying (including electrostatic spraying), dipping, and brushing. Dry film thickness typically ranges from a few tens to a few hundred micrometers, depending on the requirements. Proper substrate preparation, including cleaning and surface roughening, is essential for reliable adhesion.

Evaluation of coatkerrosten involves various tests, such as adhesion tests (ISO 2409 or equivalent), hardness, gloss measurement, impact resistance, and accelerated weathering or UV exposure tests. Powder coatings and UV-curable systems are common variants of topcoat technologies in modern coatings.
