Coactivists

Coactivists are individuals who engage in coactive behavior, a form of nonviolent direct action that aims to challenge and disrupt oppressive systems and practices. The term "coactive" was coined by the Black Radical Congress in the 1960s, drawing from the concept of "cooperation" and "activism." Coactivists often employ tactics such as sit-ins, blockades, and occupations to draw attention to social and political issues, particularly those related to racial and economic justice.

The philosophy behind coactivism is rooted in the belief that direct, confrontational action can be more effective than passive resistance or indirect forms of protest. Coactivists argue that their methods are necessary to disrupt the status quo and force those in power to address systemic issues. However, coactivism has also been criticized for potentially escalating tensions and causing harm to both protesters and the broader community.

Notable examples of coactivist movements include the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, where sit-ins and other direct actions were used to challenge segregation and discrimination, and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, which employed various forms of direct action to oppose the oppressive policies of the apartheid regime. More recently, coactivist tactics have been employed in movements such as Black Lives Matter and the Occupy Wall Street protests.
