Clothspread

Clothspread, in textile manufacturing, is the process of laying fabric onto a cutting table in multiple layers to prepare for pattern cutting. Spreading aims to produce a smooth, wrinkle-free lay that follows the fabric grain and remains aligned across all plies to prevent shifting during cutting.

Spreading may be performed by hand for small runs or by automatic spreading machines for high-volume production. Techniques include single-ply spreading (one layer at a time) and multi-ply spreading (several layers stacked for cutting). For fabrics with nap or pile, operators must maintain a consistent nap direction and account for nap height to ensure uniform appearance.

Quality control in spreading focuses on edge and grain alignment, wrinkle control, even tension, and uniform fabric distribution. Poor spreading can cause misaligned patterns, fabric waste, or garment fit issues. Delicate or slippery materials may require protective sheets, lower tensions, or tension-controlled feeders.

Equipment ranges from handheld spreading sticks and combs to wide beds, roll spreaders, and computer-controlled spreading machines with vacuum tables. Clothspread influences cutting accuracy, fabric utilization, and production speed, and is often documented for inventory and cost tracking.
