The label emphasizes the idea that these clauses are optional from the point of view of propositional content and can often be omitted or relocated without destroying the main meaning of the sentence.

In analysis, clauseperipherals include adverbial clauses (expressing time, condition, reason), non-restrictive relative clauses, and participial or gerundive supplements that attach to the main clause as adjuncts. They may appear before or after the main clause and are frequently set off by punctuation. Their function is to frame the action or to supply contextual information rather than to assert the central claim.

A key diagnostic is their sentence-internal substitutability or omission: removing a clauseperipheral generally leaves a grammatical core sentence, whereas removing a central clause would yield an illicit or semantically incomplete sentence.
