This movement pattern was first described by Swedish zoologist Edward Poulton in the late 19th century. Cirkumduktionsrörelse occurs when an animal, often a predator, moves around an object or a stimulus, curiosity-driven, without attacking or escaping. This repetitive, circular movement is typically observed in mammals and birds, often in natural environments.

One theory suggests it serves as a means of exploration, enabling the animal to gather information about its surroundings.
