Cianoacrilates

Cyanoacrylates are a group of fast-acting adhesives, commonly known as super glues or instant glues. They are a type of acrylic resin, and their rapid bonding is due to an anionic polymerization reaction. This reaction is initiated by weak bases, such as moisture present on surfaces, and proceeds very quickly, forming long polymer chains that hold the surfaces together.

The most common cyanoacrylate adhesive is ethyl cyanoacrylate, which is used in many household and industrial applications. Other variants include methyl cyanoacrylate, which is often used in medical applications due to its lower toxicity, and octyl cyanoacrylate, which is particularly effective for skin bonding and wound closure due to its flexibility and reduced irritation.

Cyanoacrylates bond by forming a strong polymer known as polycyanoacrylate. The adhesive works best on smooth, non-porous surfaces and requires minimal clamping pressure. They are known for their high tensile strength but can be brittle, making them less suitable for applications involving significant impact or bending.

While extremely effective, cyanoacrylates can bond skin and eyelids instantly. Precautions should be taken during use, and contact with skin and eyes should be avoided. If skin bonding occurs, warm soapy water and gentle rubbing can help to separate the bonded surfaces. In case of eye contact, immediate medical attention is recommended.
