Christophorus

Christophorus is the Latin form of Saint Christopher, a Christian saint venerated in various traditions. The name itself means “Christ-bearer.” The historicity of Saint Christopher is uncertain, and much of what is known comes from medieval legend rather than contemporary accounts.

The most familiar story describes Christopher as a large, strong man who served as a ferryman or guide near a river in Asia Minor. He sought to serve the greatest king and decided to help travelers cross the water. One night he carried a child across the river who grew increasingly heavy; after crossing, the child revealed himself as Christ and said that he bore the weight of all the world on his shoulders. This episode underpins the saint’s iconic portrayal as a robust traveler carrying the Christ child, often across a river.

Christophorus was widely venerated across Western and Eastern Christianity. In the Roman Catholic Church, his traditional feast day was July 25, but in 1969 the day was not retained in the universal calendar, though it remains observed in local calendars and popular devotion. He is regarded as the patron saint of travelers, motorists, hikers, and those on journeys. In Eastern Orthodoxy and some Anglican communities, he is honored with varying feast days and regional customs.

Beyond hagiography, the name Christophorus persists as a given name and appears in church dedications, iconography, and place names. Saint Christopher's image remains a common motif in Christian art and devotional objects, especially as a protector of travelers.
