Chloromethylated

Chloromethylated describes compounds that bear chloromethyl groups (-CH2Cl) introduced by chloromethylation. This modification is commonly applied to aromatic rings such as phenols and other substituted benzenes, but it can also be used on certain polymers and cellulose derivatives. The resulting chloromethylated substrates contain reactive -CH2Cl sites that can undergo further nucleophilic substitution or crosslinking, enabling the synthesis of resins, polymers, or modified materials.

Chloromethylation typically uses chloromethyl methyl ether, a common chloromethylating agent, in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. Alternative routes include in situ generation of the chloromethyl cation from formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid under acidic conditions or other reagents designed to minimize hazards. Because chloromethyl methyl ether and related reagents are highly toxic and carcinogenic, their use is heavily regulated and many modern processes seek safer substitutes.

Well-known chloromethylated materials include chloromethylated polystyrene resins, used as solid-phase supports in organic synthesis and combinatorial chemistry, and chloromethyl cellulose, an intermediate for ion-exchange resins and certain adhesives. Chloromethylated phenol-formaldehyde resins are also used in wood adhesives and as crosslinking agents.

Safety: exposure to chloromethylating reagents, especially chloromethyl methyl ether and bis(chloromethyl) ether, is strongly hazardous; handling requires appropriate engineering controls, protective equipment, and regulatory compliance due to the carcinogenic nature of some agents.
