Chlodio

Chlodio was a leader of the Salian Franks during the 5th century CE. Historical sources concerning him are limited, but he is often considered an early ancestor of the Merovingian dynasty. His name appears in later Frankish chronicles and genealogical records.

According to the 6th-century historian Gregory of Tours, Chlodio was a prominent chieftain who led his people from the Rhine River region. He is associated with the Frankish advance into Roman Gaul. Some accounts suggest he may have captured the city of Tournai and established a base there. His reign is often placed in the period following the decline of Roman authority in Gaul, a time of significant migration and conflict among Germanic tribes.

The exact dates of Chlodio's life and rule are uncertain, as with many figures from this period. He is generally believed to have been succeeded by his son, Merovech, who gave his name to the Merovingian dynasty. While direct contemporary evidence is scarce, Chlodio's significance lies in his role as a forefather and early expansionist leader of the Franks, paving the way for the later consolidation of Frankish power and the eventual rise of the Merovingian kingdom.
