Chiseling

Chiseling is a technique for shaping or removing material by striking a chisel with a hammer or mallet. The chisel's edge cuts into the workpiece, enabling tasks such as cleaning up joints, creating recesses, or carving decorative features. Chiseling is fundamental in woodworking, stone carving, and masonry, and versions of the method are used in metalworking as well.

Chisels come in many forms. Wood chisels typically have a straight or beveled edge and are used with a wooden or rubber mallet; the firmer chisel and paring chisel are common types. Stone chisels include point, flat, and toothed variants, driven with a heavy hammer. There are also specialized chisels for mortises, angles, or fine paring, and power-assisted chisels for rapid material removal.

Typical workflow involves securing the work, marking lines or outlines, and removing material in a controlled sequence. Care is taken to cut with or across the grain as appropriate, to avoid tear-out, and to work from waste toward the final surface. Sharpness is critical; dull edges require excessive force and can cause slips or chisel damage. Safety gear is advised.

Historically, chiseling is an ancient craft found in woodworking, sculpture, and construction across many cultures. Modern practice often combines hand chisels with power tools, such as pneumatic or electric chipping hammers, to accelerate material removal while preserving control for detail work. Maintenance includes regular sharpening and proper storage to prevent rust and edge dulling.
