Chewbacca

Chewbacca, commonly known as Chewie, is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. He is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk and is one of the tallest and strongest species in the series, typically described as standing around two meters tall with brown fur.

In the stories, Chewbacca serves as the co-pilot and chief mechanic of the Millennium Falcon, flying alongside smuggler Han Solo. He is renowned for his piloting and technical skills and wields a bowcaster, a traditional Wookiee weapon. He communicates primarily in Shyriiwook, a language consisting of growls and roars, though he can understand Galactic Basic and convey meaning through tone and context.

Within the Star Wars universe, Chewbacca is a long-time ally of Han Solo and a central member of the Rebel Alliance and its successors. He participates in major missions against the Galactic Empire, including engagements surrounding the destruction of the first Death Star and subsequent battles. He is depicted as fiercely loyal and protective of his friends and his fellow Wookiees.

On screen, Chewbacca first appears in Episode IV: A New Hope (1977). The character was originally portrayed by Peter Mayhew and later by Joonas Suotamo. Chewbacca appears across the original and sequel trilogies, as well as standalone films such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story, highlighting his long-standing role within the franchise.
