Chemistrywhether

Chemistrywhether is a proposed interdisciplinary concept that seeks to analyze how chemical processes and constituents of the atmosphere influence weather patterns and events. The term is not widely used in formal literature and does not denote a distinct, widely recognized scientific discipline, but rather a conceptual umbrella used in some discussions to emphasize the chemistry-weather interface.

Definition and scope: It covers gas-phase and heterogeneous chemical reactions in the troposphere and stratosphere, the role of reactive radicals, ozone, methane, and nitrogen oxides; aerosol and cloud chemistry; interactions between chemical processes and microphysical processes in clouds and precipitation; and how these processes modify temperature, humidity, and cloud formation, which in turn affect weather phenomena.

Methods: Researchers rely on field measurements (air samplers, sensors, lidar, spectroscopy), laboratory experiments, and numerical models such as chemical transport models and cloud-resolving models that couple chemistry and physics. Data sources include ground-based networks and satellite observations.

Applications and relevance: By more explicitly linking chemistry with weather dynamics, chemistrywhether aims to improve forecasts of air quality, fog formation, precipitation, and storm intensity, as well as to better represent atmospheric chemistry in weather and climate models.

Limitations and critique: The term lacks standard definition; many scientists prefer to frame this work within established fields: atmospheric chemistry, physical meteorology, and aerosol science. The ambiguity may hinder communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
