Chelmer

Chelmer most commonly refers to the River Chelmer, a watercourse in the county of Essex, England. The river is a defining feature of the county town of Chelmsford and forms part of the region’s historical and present-day landscape.

The River Chelmer rises in the northern countryside of Essex and flows generally southeast through Chelmsford, where it has shaped settlement, industry, and urban development. It continues through the rural and market-town areas of central Essex before discharging into the tidal region associated with the River Blackwater, contributing to the Blackwater estuary on the Essex coast.
