Chaytala

Chaytala is a town and municipality in the Sira river valley in the eastern lowlands of Veridia. It has an estimated population of 8,600 as of 2023 and covers about 24 square kilometers, serving as the administrative center of the Chaytala District. The name derives from the Chaytal language and is commonly said to mean "meeting place by the water."

Chaytala traces its origins to a medieval ferry site used by traders crossing the Sira. It developed into a market town in the late medieval period and gained municipal status in 1952. The town has historically faced earthquakes and floods which have influenced rebuilding and architecture.

Geographically, Chaytala sits on flat alluvial plains with small hills to the north. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers; the area sees significant rainfall in the late autumn.

The local economy combines agriculture, fishing, and craft production. Orchard crops such as citrus and olives are common, along with barley for local markets. Small-scale textile and woodcraft workshops operate in the historic center. The town is connected by a national highway and a regional rail line, and it maintains a small river port for local traffic and modest tourism.

Culturally, Chaytala hosts an annual Water Day festival that celebrates the river and local crafts. Landmarks include a 12th-century bridge, the old town square, and the Chaytala Museum of Local History. The municipality is governed by a 15-member council led by a mayor, and is divided into North, Central, and South districts.

Education and health services include two primary schools, one secondary school, and a local clinic.
