The most prominent Charudutta is a central character in the Sanskrit play "Mrcchakatika" (The Little Clay Cart) attributed to Shudraka. In this play, Charudutta is a wealthy but impoverished merchant from Ujjain. He is known for his generosity and virtuous nature, despite his financial struggles. The plot of "Mrcchakatika" revolves around his love affair with Vasantasena, a wealthy courtesan, and the ensuing dramatic events that test his character and lead to a trial. Beyond the play, "Charudutta" can be used more broadly in Sanskrit as an adjective or noun meaning "having a beautiful or excellent form" or "a person of excellent character."
