A changemaker is an individual who works to create meaningful, lasting improvements in society by developing and implementing innovative ideas that address social, environmental, or cultural issues. Changemakers often pursue systemic change rather than isolated interventions and may operate across sectors, including non-profit, business, government, and community groups.

The term has roots in social innovation and entrepreneurship discourse of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Organizations such as Ashoka popularized the label, highlighting individuals who identify social problems, mobilize resources, and design scalable solutions.

Changemakers work in many fields, including poverty alleviation, education, health, climate action, and human rights. Common approaches include identifying needs, prototyping solutions, building partnerships, and scaling successful models. They emphasize collaboration, learning, and accountability, often using impact data to refine efforts.

Examples of well-known changemakers include Muhammad Yunus, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, and Jane Goodall, though the term applies to countless local leaders who drive change in their communities. The label is also used in corporate and educational settings to describe students and employees who lead initiatives for social impact.

Critics argue that the term can be vague or aspirational and may obscure ongoing structural power relations. Proponents counter that a clear focus on outcomes and collaboration helps translate ideas into durable social progress.
