Chakyars

Chakyars are a community traditionally associated with the performance of Koodiyattam, a Sanskrit drama form originating in Kerala, India. They are a distinct social group whose lineage and role in the performance are passed down through generations. The Chakyar community is primarily found in the Palakkad and Thrissur districts of Kerala. Historically, their performances were confined to temples and temple courtyards, known as koothambalams.

Koodiyattam, the art form practiced by Chakyars, is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The performances are characterized by elaborate attabhinaya (facial expressions and gestures), dramatic narratives, and musical accompaniment. Chakyars are the custodians of this ancient theatrical tradition, responsible for its preservation and continuation. Their role extends beyond mere performance; they are also scholars and practitioners of the dramatic arts, upholding the intricate rules and conventions of Koodiyattam.

The social status of Chakyars within the traditional Kerala caste hierarchy was unique, often placing them in a position of respect due to their association with religious and cultural performances. However, this also came with certain restrictions. In contemporary times, efforts are underway to ensure the survival and wider recognition of Koodiyattam, with Chakyar families actively participating in teaching and performing the art form to new generations and audiences beyond temple precincts.
