Ceridwen

Ceridwen is a prominent figure in Welsh mythology, primarily known as a sorceress and enchantress. She is most famously associated with the cauldron of inspiration and knowledge, known as Awen, which she kept in her underground dwelling. The tale of Ceridwen is central to the Mabinogion, a collection of medieval Welsh prose tales.

According to the legend, Ceridwen brewed the contents of the cauldron for her son, Morfran, who was considered ugly and untalented. The potion was intended to grant him wisdom, poetic talent, and inspiration. She tasked a young boy named Gwion Bach with stirring the cauldron, which was to simmer for a year and a day. As the potion neared completion, three drops splashed onto Gwion Bach's thumb. Upon tasting these drops, he gained immediate knowledge of future events and hidden secrets.

Realizing the potion was meant for her son, Ceridwen was enraged. Gwion Bach, now forewarned of her anger, fled. Ceridwen pursued him, and their chase involved shapeshifting into various forms. Gwion Bach transformed into a grain of wheat and was subsequently swallowed by Ceridwen, who had become a hen. Later, Ceridwen gave birth to Gwion Bach, reborn as the poet Taliesin, considered the greatest bard of Wales. This cyclical transformation highlights themes of rebirth, knowledge, and fate within Welsh lore. Ceridwen is often depicted as a complex maternal figure, embodying both nurturing and vengeful aspects.
