Ceolreds
Ceolreds were a 7th-century English monastery located at Crowland Abbey in Lincolnshire, England. The monastery was founded around 653 AD by the Saxon princess Cyneswide, who as the wife of Prince Aelfwin was confronted with increasing Viking raids in the region. As one of the several Ceoledics monasteries established in defensive constructions early on, Crowland Abbey was specifically designed to serve as both a place of refuge and a base for combat. The name Ceolreds is often used to refer to the institution established during the Viking Age, combining the Old English words Ceol meaning battle and eords, eorð meaning earth.
