Centreforwards (centre forwards) is a football position occupied by the central attacker who operates closest to the opponent's goal in most formations. The centre forward is typically the team's principal goal scorer and the focal point of attacking play, combining finishing ability with physical presence to hold up the ball and link with teammates.

Key responsibilities include finishing chances, making penetrating runs, occupying central channels to disrupt defenses, holding the ball to allow supporting players to join, and pressing defenders to win back possession. Attributes commonly sought in centre forwards include clinical finishing, movement off the ball, strength, pace, and aerial ability. Tactical variations include the traditional target man, who uses height and hold-up play; the poacher, who specializes in finishing chances inside the box; and the complete forward, who contributes in build-up, pressing, and distribution. Some systems also deploy a false nine, a forward who drops into midfield to create space for wingers, challenging the classic centre-forward role.

Centre forwards feature prominently in formations such as 4-4-2, 4-3-3, and 3-5-2, often paired with a second striker or wingers. The role has evolved with modern tactics toward greater versatility, with players required to contribute to pressing and link-up play as well as scoring.
