Cecropias
Cecropias are a genus of trees belonging to the family Urticaceae, commonly known as the stinging nettle family. These trees are native to the Neotropics, found from Mexico south to Argentina. They are fast-growing, pioneer species, often colonizing disturbed areas like roadsides, landslides, and cleared forests. Cecropias are easily recognizable by their large, palmately lobed leaves and their distinctive hollow stems. These stems are often inhabited by Azteca ants, with which the trees have a mutualistic relationship. The ants protect the tree from herbivores and competing vegetation, while the tree provides shelter and food for the ants in the form of Beltian bodies.
