Caudipteryx

Caudipteryx is a genus of small, feathered, non-avian theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 125 to 122 million years ago. Fossils of Caudipteryx have been discovered in the Jiufotang Formation of Liaoning Province, China. These fossils are remarkably well-preserved, often including impressions of feathers.

The name Caudipteryx means "tail feather," referring to the prominent tail feathers found on specimens. Caudipteryx was a relatively small dinosaur, measuring about one meter (3.3 feet) in length. It possessed a short tail, a beaked snout, and a stout body. Its forelimbs were short and likely not capable of flight, although they were adorned with long feathers. The hindlimbs were robust and adapted for running.

Caudipteryx is classified within the Oviraptorosauria, a group of feathered dinosaurs known for their varied diets and often colorful plumage. Based on its beak and dentition (or lack thereof in some species), Caudipteryx is thought to have been an omnivore or herbivore, feeding on plants, seeds, and possibly small invertebrates. The long pennaceous feathers on its arms and tail are believed to have been used for display rather than for flight. These feathers suggest a vibrant appearance and may have played a role in courtship rituals or species recognition. The discovery of Caudipteryx has contributed significantly to our understanding of feather evolution and the diversity of non-avian dinosaurs.
