Castleandmoat is a term that describes a specific type of defensive fortification. It refers to a structure, typically a castle, that is surrounded by a moat. A moat is a deep, wide ditch filled with water, which served as a significant obstacle to attackers. The presence of a moat, combined with the formidable walls of a castle, created a robust defense system.

The primary purpose of a moat was to prevent siege engines and ground troops from directly assaulting the castle walls. The water made it difficult to tunnel under the defenses, and crossing it required specialized equipment like bridges or rafts, which could be easily targeted by defenders. Moats could be filled with water from rivers, streams, or by digging a reservoir.
