Casegenitive

Casegenitive is a term used to describe the genitive case in grammar, the morphological category that marks a noun’s relationship to another noun, most often indicating possession or a close association. In languages with an overt case system, the genitive appears as a distinct form on the possessor or the relevant noun and may require agreement with gender, number, or other grammatical features. In analytic languages, the same relations are commonly expressed with prepositions such as of or with possessive constructions rather than a dedicated case ending.

The core function of the genitive is to express possession, but it can also denote origin, part-whole relationships, measurement, or other close connections between nouns. Some languages use a single genitive form with wide-ranging uses, while others distinguish multiple genitive subtypes for different relational meanings. Latin marks possession with a genitive noun, as in liber pueri “the book of the boy.” German uses a genitive with definite articles in phrases like des Mannes Auto “the man’s car.” English commonly expresses possession through the possessive -'s or the prepositional form of “of,” as in the boy’s book or the book of the boy, reflecting a less inflectional approach to possession compared with true case systems. In languages with rich morphology, the genitive may also indicate broader relations beyond possession.
