Carbonate-substituted refers to a class of compounds in which carbonate ions (CO3^2−) are incorporated into a host lattice or framework, replacing other anions or occupying interstitial sites. It is a form of solid solution or mixed-anion substitution and is common across inorganic, mineral, and biomaterials chemistry.

In minerals and ceramics, carbonate substitution often occurs by replacing a framework anion such as phosphate or hydroxide, or by random substitution within carbonate-bearing lattices, leading to changes in lattice parameters and charge balance. Charge compensation may involve additional cations or vacancies, and the extent of substitution can vary as a function of composition, temperature, and pressure.

A well-known example is carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite, where carbonate ions replace phosphate (type B substitution) or hydroxide (type A substitution). This carbonate-containing apatite occurs in bone and teeth and influences solubility, bioactivity, and mechanical properties. Similar substitutions are observed in other calcium phosphates and in synthetic biomedical ceramics.

In synthetic materials, carbonate substitution is used to tune properties of catalysts, ceramics, and metal–organic frameworks. It can adjust basicity, stability, porosity, and vibrational signatures, often studied by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. Characterization relies on lattice parameter measurements and identification of carbonate modes.

Natural occurrence includes carbonate minerals and bone mineral in which carbonate substitution affects solubility and remodeling processes; in dentistry and orthopedics, carbonate-substituted phases are studied for their enhanced biodegradability and compatibility.
