Carangis

Carangis is a name that has appeared in some discussions as a proposed genus of ray-finned fishes within the order Carangiformes. It is not recognized as a valid genus in current taxonomic databases, and no species are formally assigned to it.

The etymology suggests a connection to the carangids, the family of jacks and trevallies, with the suffix -is a common ending for genus names in historic literature. In modern taxonomy, Carangis is regarded as an obsolete or unused name rather than a valid taxon.

Some sources reference Carangis as a provisional or descriptive label used in non-peer-reviewed or outdated discussions of fossil material with carangid affinities. Without a formal description that designates a type specimen, measurements, and diagnostic characters, the name cannot be recognized under the rules of zoological nomenclature.

If ever formally described, Carangis would be expected to share core carangid traits such as a laterally compressed body, an emarginate to forked caudal fin, and predatory habits, but the defining features and genus diagnosis would need to be established in a published, peer-reviewed description.
