Capverdian

Capverdian is an English-language demonym used to describe people from Cabo Verde, also known as Cape Verde. The term can be used interchangeably with Cape Verdean, though Capverdian appears less common in everyday usage. It generally refers to individuals or communities connected to the island nation and, by extension, to the Cape Verdean diaspora.

Geography and language play a central role in Capverdian identity. Cabo Verde is an island nation in the central Atlantic Ocean, about 500 kilometers off the coast of West Africa. It consists of ten volcanic islands. The official language is Portuguese, while Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu) is widely spoken in daily life and has several regional varieties. The country’s population is roughly half a million, with a substantial diaspora abroad.

Culture and society are shaped by a blend of African, Portuguese, and Lusophone influences. Cape Verdean music is internationally recognized, especially morna and coladeira, with Cesária Évora among the best-known artists. Cape Verdean cuisine centers on seafood and cachupa, a slow-cooked corn- and bean-based stew. Emigration has reinforced transnational ties and contributed to a thriving Cape Verdean culture abroad.
