Capisol

Capisol is a brand name for a pharmaceutical product containing the active ingredient cyclodextrin. Specifically, it refers to a sterile, injectable solution of sulfobutylether beta-cyclodextrin (SBECD). SBECD is a chemically modified cyclodextrin, a cyclic oligosaccharide composed of glucose units. These molecules have a toroidal or cone shape with a hydrophilic outer surface and a hydrophobic inner cavity. This unique structure allows SBECD to form complex inclusions with various drug molecules, thereby increasing their solubility, stability, and bioavailability.

Capisol is primarily used as an excipient in parenteral drug formulations. It helps to solubilize poorly water-soluble drugs, enabling them to be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. By forming complexes, Capisol can protect sensitive drug molecules from degradation, extend their shelf life, and improve their delivery to the target site.
