Capgras

Capgras delusion is a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by the delusional belief that a familiar person, place, or object has been replaced by an identical imposter. This delusion is often described as a feeling of "strangeness" or "unfamiliarity" associated with a previously known entity. Individuals experiencing Capgras delusion recognize the physical appearance of the person, but feel that they are not the same, often attributing this difference to subtle changes or a belief in an exact duplicate.

The exact cause of Capgras delusion is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to a disconnect between the brain's recognition systems and emotional processing areas. Neuroimaging studies have suggested that damage or dysfunction in pathways connecting the temporal lobe, which is involved in object recognition, and the limbic system, which is responsible for emotional responses, may play a role. It is often associated with other neurological or psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dementia, and brain injuries.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough psychiatric and neurological evaluation.
