Capespår

Capespår is a coastal hiking network and cultural route that traverses a sequence of capes along the northern coastline. The route links coastal towns, lighthouses, protected habitats, and archaeological sites, offering multi-day treks and shorter day hikes. It is managed to emphasize sustainability and accessibility for visitors with varying levels of experience.

The name Capespår combines the English term “cape” with the Swedish word “spår” meaning trail or track. In regional tourism and conservation materials, Capespår denotes both the physical trail network and the broader program of education, preservation, and community involvement that accompanies it.

The network comprises several marked segments totaling roughly 280 kilometers. Terrain ranges from wooden boardwalks and sandy beaches to exposed cliff paths and rocky scrambles. Towns, ferry links, and visitor centers serve as trailheads and resupply points; signposts and maps aid navigation, and there are designated rest areas and viewpoints along the best-known segments.

Initiated in the late 1990s by national parks authorities and local municipalities, Capespår aims to promote coastal heritage and sustainable travel. The Capespår Foundation coordinates maintenance, liaison with landowners, and environmental monitoring, with funding from public sources, grants, and partner organizations.

The route protects seabird colonies, dune systems, and tide pools, while engaging communities through crafts, seafood, and maritime history. Seasonal restrictions mitigate disturbance; sustainable accommodations and guided programs help distribute visitation and support local economies.
