Cananea

Cananea is a city and municipality in the northwestern part of the Mexican state of Sonora, near the United States border opposite Naco, Arizona. It lies in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental and has an arid climate with hot summers and mild winters.

The settlement grew from copper mining in the late 19th century, with the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company establishing the mine and building much of the town. This mining-centered development attracted workers from across the region and shaped the area's growth. The city is historically notable for the Cananea strike of 1906–1907, when Mexican workers demanded better wages and conditions. The suppression of the strike and the events that followed contributed to the broader social ferment that helped spark the Mexican Revolution.
