CVTfluid

CVT fluid, often abbreviated CVTF, is a specialized transmission fluid designed for continuously variable transmissions. In a CVT, the hydraulic system controls pulley positions and belt or chain operation, while CVTF also lubricates gears and bearings, absorbs heat, and helps transmit hydraulic power. CVTF is not interchangeable with every automatic transmission fluid, as CVTs have unique friction and viscosity requirements that affect shifting feel and belt life.

Key functions and characteristics of CVTF include providing stable viscosity over a wide temperature range, delivering appropriate friction for CVT clutches and pulleys, and resisting shear that can occur under constant changes in load and speed. CVTF is typically formulated with synthetic base oils and a balanced set of friction modifiers, anti-wear additives, detergents, anti-foaming agents, and corrosion inhibitors to protect components and maintain performance.

Compatibility is important for CVTF. Many automakers publish their own CVTF specifications, and using the wrong fluid can lead to poor shifting, noise, or accelerated wear. When servicing a CVT, technicians usually follow the manufacturer's recommended service interval and use the CVTF that meets the specified standard or designation for the vehicle. Some CVT designs also incorporate a fluid cooling path, where CVTF quality and temperature stability become more critical.

Maintenance considerations include monitoring for signs of CVTF degradation, such as slipping, shuddering, harsh or delayed shifts, or overheating. Routine checks may involve fluid level and condition assessment, with replacements performed according to specifications. Proper disposal of used CVTF is recommended, adhering to local environmental regulations.
