CT colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is a medical imaging technique used to examine the colon and rectum. It employs computed tomography (CT) scanning to create detailed, three-dimensional images of the inside of the colon. This non-invasive procedure is primarily used as a screening tool for colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps.

The procedure typically involves the patient lying on their back and stomach on a CT scanner table. A small amount of air or carbon dioxide is gently inflated into the colon through a lubricated rectal tube to distend it, allowing for better visualization of the lining. The CT scanner then rotates around the patient, acquiring a series of X-ray images. These images are processed by a computer to reconstruct detailed cross-sectional and three-dimensional views of the colon.

CT colonography offers several advantages, including its non-invasive nature compared to conventional colonoscopy, which requires sedation and insertion of a long, flexible tube. It can also sometimes detect abnormalities outside the colon that might be missed by traditional methods. However, it is not a therapeutic procedure, meaning that if polyps or other abnormalities are found, a conventional colonoscopy is usually required for removal or biopsy. The radiation exposure from CT scans is also a consideration. The accuracy of CT colonography in detecting small polyps can be slightly lower than conventional colonoscopy.
