CP437 and CP850 are character encoding standards used primarily in early personal computing, especially within DOS (Disk Operating System) environments. These encodings specify how sequences of bits are mapped to characters, enabling text display and data exchange in computer systems.

Code page 437, also known as US or OEM US, was the original character set for IBM PC compatible computers introduced in 1981. It includes 256 characters, combining standard ASCII symbols, graphical characters, and extended symbols such as box-drawing shading, shapes, and international characters. CP437 was designed to support early PC graphics and was widely used in DOS applications and gaming.

Code page 850, also known as OEM Multilingual Latin 1, was introduced in 1987 as an extension of CP437 to better support Western European languages. It features similar character capacity but replaces some of the original graphical characters with accented letters and additional symbols necessary for European languages, enhancing internationalization.

Both CP437 and CP850 are part of IBM’s family of OEM code pages and are distinguished by their support for different sets of characters tailored to specific linguistic and graphical needs. They are largely obsolete today but played critical roles during the early era of personal computing. Modern systems typically use Unicode (such as UTF-8), which encompasses the full range of characters from these standards along with many others.
