COPIlike

COPIlike is a term used in molecular biology to describe proteins that share structural or functional similarities with the coatomer protein complex, COPI. The COPI complex is essential for vesicular transport within the Golgi apparatus, mediating retrograde transport from the Golgi back to the endoplasmic reticulum. Proteins classified as COPIlike are not part of the canonical COPI complex itself but exhibit characteristics that suggest a related role in membrane trafficking or protein sorting.

These COPIlike proteins often possess domains or motifs that are also found in subunits of the COPI complex, such as WD40 repeats or Arf-binding domains. Their precise functions can vary, but they are generally implicated in specific aspects of intracellular transport, which may include other Golgi-related pathways, endosomal trafficking, or even transport processes outside the Golgi. Research into COPIlike proteins aims to understand their specific roles, how they interact with other cellular machinery, and how they might differ from or complement the functions of the core COPI complex.
