CO2gewicht

CO2gewicht is a term used to denote the mass of carbon dioxide emitted or removed, expressed in kilograms or metric tons. It is used in environmental accounting to quantify direct CO2 emissions associated with a process, activity, or product, without aggregating other greenhouse gases.

Calculation of CO2gewicht involves multiplying activity data (such as energy use, fuel burned, or material throughput) by a CO2 emission factor for the relevant source or process. For example, energy consumption multiplied by the CO2 emission factor of the electricity mix, plus emissions from other identified sources. Negative values reflect sequestration or net removal.

CO2gewicht versus CO2e: CO2gewicht measures only CO2 mass, while CO2e expresses multiple greenhouse gases in terms of their global warming potential relative to CO2. CO2gewicht can be useful for straightforward CO2 reporting, but CO2e provides a more comprehensive comparison across gases.

Applications and limitations: CO2gewicht can be used in corporate reporting, product-level accounting, and policy discussions where a simple CO2 mass is desired. Limitations include exclusion of non-CO2 greenhouse gases, indirect emissions, and differences in radiative forcing among gases. Emission factors introduce uncertainties, and clearly defined system boundaries and time horizons are essential for meaningful interpretation.
