CO2Transport

CO2Transport refers to the methods and infrastructure used to move carbon dioxide (CO2) from its source to a storage or utilization site. This is a critical component of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies, which aim to mitigate climate change by preventing CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

The primary methods of CO2 transport involve pipelines, ships, and, to a lesser extent, road or rail tankers. Pipelines are the most common and cost-effective method for transporting large volumes of CO2 over land, especially for established industrial hubs. These pipelines are typically designed to carry CO2 in a dense phase, either as a liquid or supercritical fluid, which allows for efficient transport.

For offshore sources or when land-based pipelines are not feasible, ships are employed. CO2 is liquefied under pressure and loaded onto specialized tankers. This method is particularly relevant for transporting CO2 from capture facilities to offshore geological storage sites. Road and rail tankers are generally used for smaller volumes or shorter distances, often for pilot projects or where pipeline infrastructure is not yet developed.

The design and operation of CO2 transport systems must address safety concerns, including the potential for leaks and the corrosive nature of CO2, especially in the presence of moisture. Regulatory frameworks and robust monitoring are essential to ensure the safe and secure movement of CO2 throughout the supply chain. The development of efficient and reliable CO2 transport infrastructure is a key enabler for the widespread deployment of CCS and CCUS technologies.
