CMOStransistors

CMOS transistors are complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor transistors, consisting of both p-type and n-type MOSFETs. They form the building blocks of most modern digital integrated circuits, including microprocessors and memory, due to their high integration density and low static power consumption.

In a CMOS circuit, each logic function is implemented with a pair of transistors: a p-channel MOSFET and an n-channel MOSFET. The pMOS conducts when its gate is pulled low toward ground, while the nMOS conducts when its gate is driven high toward the supply voltage. In a typical CMOS inverter, one transistor connects the output to the supply rail and the other to ground, so only one device conducts at a time in steady state. This complementary arrangement minimizes current flow when the circuit is not switching, giving CMOS its characteristic low static power consumption.

Fabrication of CMOS devices involves creating MOSFETs on a silicon substrate with an insulating gate oxide and a polycrystalline silicon gate. P-type and N-type transistors are formed in complementary doped regions, often using separate wells or substrates for isolation. Modern CMOS processes increasingly use advanced transistor architectures such as FinFETs or nanosheet devices to improve control of the channel and reduce leakage at small geometries.

Key characteristics include high noise margins, good scalability, and low standby power, balanced against challenges from leakage currents and variability at advanced nodes. Power consumption is dominated by dynamic switching energy proportional to the load capacitance and the square of the supply voltage. CMOS remains the dominant technology for digital logic and memory in contemporary electronics.
