CLPdirektiivit

CLPdirektiivit refers to the European Union's Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures. This regulation, often simply called the CLP Regulation, aims to harmonize the classification and labeling of chemicals across the EU and European Economic Area. It aligns EU legislation with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

The primary objective of CLP is to protect human health and the environment by ensuring that the hazards associated with chemicals are clearly communicated to users. This is achieved through standardized hazard classification criteria and consistent labeling elements. These elements include hazard pictograms, signal words (such as "Danger" or "Warning"), hazard statements describing the nature of the hazard, and precautionary statements advising on measures to prevent or minimize adverse effects.

The CLP Regulation applies to both substances and mixtures placed on the market. Manufacturers, importers, and downstream users are responsible for classifying their chemicals according to the CLP criteria and for ensuring that the packaging and labeling are compliant. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) plays a key role in implementing and enforcing the CLP Regulation, including maintaining a classification and labeling inventory of substances. Compliance with CLP is a legal requirement for placing chemicals on the EU market and is crucial for safe handling and use of these products.
