CIPPteknik

CIPPteknik, or cured-in-place pipe technique, is a trenchless rehabilitation method used to repair damaged pipelines in situ by installing a resin-impregnated flexible liner that cures to form a new pipe within the existing host pipe. It is part of trenchless technology and is widely used for municipal sewer and pipeline infrastructure.

The method begins with access points, CCTV inspection, and cleaning of the pipe. A liner tube made of felt or fiber-reinforced fabric is saturated with a thermosetting resin and inverted or pulled into the damaged pipe. The liner is then actuated by steam, hot water, or UV/light to cure, creating a sealed, structurally reinforced pipe. After curing, the ends are cut to established dimensions and the liner is tested for leaks and integrity.

Materials used include liner fabrics such as polyester or fiberglass with resins like epoxy, vinyl ester, or polyester. The process supports a wide range of pipe sizes depending on equipment, and applications include sewer lines, culverts, and potable water service lines with appropriate material selection.

Advantages of CIPPteknik include minimal excavation, reduced restoration time, and lower environmental impact, along with the ability to rehabilitate pipes with multiple defects. Limitations include dependence on proper curing, the structural capacity of the liner, potential constraints on bends and defect types, and the need for adequate access points and pre-cleaning; not every condition is suitable for this method.

Standards and history: CIPP was developed in the 20th century and has since been specified in various standards and guidelines from organizations such as ASTM and ISO, covering preparation, installation, curing, and testing.
