CIELAB and CIELUV are both color spaces designed to be perceptually uniform. This means that a given numerical difference in color values should correspond to a roughly equal perceived difference in color to a human observer. They were developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) in 1976.

CIELAB, also known as CIE 1976 L*a*b*, is arguably the more widely used of the two. It is based on a theoretical observer and uses three coordinates: L* represents lightness (ranging from 0 for black to 100 for white), a* represents the green-to-red axis, and b* represents the blue-to-yellow axis. This system is device-independent, meaning it aims to describe colors as humans perceive them, regardless of how they are produced or displayed.

CIELUV, or CIE 1976 L*u*v*, is similar in concept but uses different chromaticity coordinates. It defines L* for lightness, and then u* and v* for chromaticity. CIELUV is often preferred for additive color mixing, such as in display technologies, because it treats the mixing of lights more consistently. However, for subtractive color mixing, like with pigments, CIELAB is generally considered more appropriate. Both color spaces are important tools in color science and industry for tasks such as color matching, quality control, and image processing.
