CIELAB and CIELUV are both color spaces designed to be perceptually uniform. This means that a given numerical difference in color values should correspond to a roughly equal perceived difference in color to a human observer. They were developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) in 1976.
CIELAB, also known as CIE 1976 L*a*b*, is arguably the more widely used of the two. It
CIELUV, or CIE 1976 L*u*v*, is similar in concept but uses different chromaticity coordinates. It defines L*
