CHAdeMO standards refer to a set of specifications for DC (Direct Current) electric vehicle charging. The name CHAdeMO is an abbreviation for "CHArge de MOve," a Japanese phrase meaning "charge for moving." This standard was developed by a consortium of Japanese automotive manufacturers and companies, including Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Fuji Electric, and was first released in 2010.

The primary goal of the CHAdeMO standard is to enable rapid charging of electric vehicles. It utilizes a proprietary connector that communicates with the vehicle to manage the charging process. Key features of CHAdeMO include its bidirectional charging capability, allowing for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) or vehicle-to-home (V2H) power transfer, although this feature is not universally implemented or utilized by all vehicles and charging stations. The standard has evolved over time with different versions offering varying charging speeds.

CHAdeMO has been widely adopted, particularly in Japan and parts of Europe and North America, though its global prevalence is facing increasing competition from other charging standards like CCS (Combined Charging System). The CHAdeMO Association continues to develop and maintain the standard, focusing on interoperability and safety. While its market share is declining in some regions due to the rise of CCS, it remains a significant charging standard for many electric vehicles currently on the road.
