MEK is widely used as a solvent in various industrial applications. Its excellent solvency properties make it effective for dissolving resins, lacquers, paints, and adhesives. It is commonly found in nail polish removers, varnishes, and coatings. Due to its moderate evaporation rate, it is preferred in applications where controlled drying is necessary.

Industrially, MEK is produced through the dehydrogenation of 2-butanol. It is also formed as a byproduct in some chemical processes. MEK is flammable and should be handled with care, avoiding open flames and sparks. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of MEK vapor can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, and may affect the central nervous system. Ingestion can lead to nausea and vomiting.

MEK is readily biodegradable and has a relatively low potential for bioaccumulation. Its environmental impact is primarily related to its volatile nature, contributing to air pollution as a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC). Nevertheless, its widespread use is a testament to its utility as a versatile and effective solvent.
